1) A carry bag
If you've invested in a quality cheap laptop then you should make sure that you protect it from bumps and scratches when you're on the move. A basic laptop case is suitable for most circumstances but think about spending a little more if you plan to regularly transport yours on public transport or by bike as even minor bumps and knocks can be costly and result in a broken computer. It's also important that your shoulders are protected as well as your computer so opt for a lightweight bag with a padded strap. Extra compartments are also useful to ensure your accessories aren't loose and damaging your computer.
- 2) External drives
Cheap laptops can have an extended and more productive life with useful external drives such as extra storage and DVD rewritable drives. Ideally, it's best to invest in a computer which has all the storage and extra features integrated as they can sometimes be bulky to transport. External storage can be useful if you want to keep films, music and videos, important work and sensitive data in a separate place rather than carrying them with you. Provided your files aren't too large you can store them on a super small USB stick, they cost as little as a few pounds to buy.
- 3) Mouse and keyboard
Using the touch pad on your computer is fine when you're on the move or if you use your computer for small bursts at a time. However, if your laptop is your primary machine, investing in a mouse and keyboard can make using your computer more comfortable. A mouse and keyboard can ease the pressure on your wrists and hands as well as allowing you to sit in the most comfortable position at your desk. Wireless keyboards and a mouse will give you even more flexibility.
- 4) Extra battery
Having your computer run out of battery halfway through a train journey can be a real inconvenience. To avoid this ensure you invest in a secondary battery for your computer to simply replace your primary battery which can then be recharged later. Batteries cost around £50 for standard machines which makes them a great investment to avoid wasting time on your commute.
- 5) Mobile broadband
The main benefit of a laptop is that it's portable and ideally you should be able to use all the features of your computer wherever you go. Unfortunately not everywhere offers wireless internet connection, however this doesn't mean you can't stay connected on the move though. Mobile broadband allows you to access the internet from your computer wherever you are, usually for a set amount per month or as a pay as you go option. One of the most popular devices for mobile broadband is a USB stick which you can simply plug into your machine to become connected, although many mobile phones also provide mobile broadband. These devices are an affordable way to have internet access on the move and are a great solution for business people who regularly commute.
